The creditor schedule is the first document a court reads, and the last one most companies prepare.

The creditor schedule is the first document a court reads, and the last one most companies prepare.

Ask a director in difficulty how much the company owes and the answer is usually a figure. Ask who is owed, since when, with what security, at what stage of recovery, and the answer becomes a search through e-mails, reminders and bank statements. Yet that second answer is the only one that matters. The tax authority, the social security office, the bank and the court all reason creditor by creditor, not in totals. A company that cannot present its liabilities in that form is not managing its situation, it is being managed by it.

Three principles that turn a list of debts into an instrument of control :

1. One schedule, every creditor, every week. Tax, social security, banks, suppliers, leasing, shareholders, staff : each line with the principal, the accrued charges, the security held, the stage of recovery and the last contact. Not a snapshot for the accountant at year-end, but a living document refreshed every week, because the ranking of creditors and the pressure they apply change faster than the balance sheet.

2. The schedule decides the sequence, not the loudest creditor. Without it, payments follow the most recent bailiff’s letter. With it, they follow a rule : secured and preferential claims, fiscal and social debts that carry personal liability for directors, then the suppliers the business cannot operate without. The order is a decision, and a decision needs a document.

3. The schedule is the negotiation. A payment plan request, a bank waiver, a judicial reorganisation : each begins with the same question from the other side, show me the whole picture. A schedule that is complete, reconciled and dated is credibility before a word is spoken. One that is partial or disputed costs the company the only thing it has left to offer, which is trust.

The strategic lesson is simple. A company in difficulty is judged on the quality of its information before it is judged on its prospects. The creditor schedule is where that judgment starts : the first document a tax collector, a banker or a judge will ask for, and the one that tells them whether the file in front of them is being run or merely endured. Prepare it before anyone asks for it.

Word from the field : on a new file, the creditor schedule is the first deliverable, before any plan or filing. Tax, social security, banks, suppliers, one line each, with the stage of recovery and the last contact. In most cases it takes three days to build and it changes the conversation with the director on the first morning : he discovers the order in which things will actually happen.
